The Limerick & District Anglers Association held our final Pike competition of 2018 on Sunday 30th December at the beautiful scenic villages of Montpelier / O’Brien’s Bridge. The weather Gods were really shining down upon us, as conditions were dry, mild and calm. A very good turnout saw 21 senior anglers and 9 junior anglers out fishing, and hopes were high of a few fish given the ideal conditions.
Anglers fished above and below the Bridge on the Clare side, and up river on the Montpelier side. Fishing was from 11-1530 and we were only fishing a few minutes when up and coming Junior Angler, Wayne Slattery was first off the mark with a 3lb fish. Wayne is a fine young Angler and one to watch for the future. Well done Wayne for leading the way.
There were several more fish landed and a good number of fish dropped or lost at the nets. The fishing was steady, lots of takes and great excitement throughout the day. overall we had 9 pike, all returned alive to grow and fight another day.
All our junior anglers fished very well and they worked hard. They out-fished the adults as the juniors had more fish!! Holly Hannan struck gold with a fine fish of 10lb 1oz. Well done, Holly, another up and coming fisherwoman.
Our Juniors are a credit to this club as they handled their fish very well, ensured each fish went back alive and made sure their fishing spot was cleared of all rubbish after the competition. It is very promising to see young anglers having great respect for their environment and their fish.
Senior section was won by Jack Pike with a 7lb 9oz fish.
1st place – Holly Hannon 10lb 1oz fish
2nd place – Mason O Donnell 5lb 4oz fish
3rd place – Wayne Slattery 3lb
4th place – Cian Monahan 2lb 10oz
5th place – Lee Duggan 2lb 7oz
A huge thank you to Senator Kieran O Donnell who kindly came out and presented the Anglers with their prizes and gave an update on the ongoing discussions to have the lower Shannon reopened to our salmon anglers which is vitally important to us. Thank you for your hard work Senator O Donnell
The club will be commencing a Pike Fishing League in the next 2-3 weeks for both adult & juniors, we hope our first venue will be the Pumphouse at Annacotty if water levels are suitable, at the moment 13th January is the date but keep an eye on the page and keep in contact with the club in case any change
We would like to wish all past & present members of the association a prosperous new year and tight lines for 2019 and we thank you for all your continuous support and look forward to seeing you all on the riverbank soon.
